Geospatial
Technologies are used to capture, store, manage, measure,
display and analyze physical and cultural features and
phenomena. Core
geospatial technologies are known as Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote
Sensing (RS).
GIS includes the
computer software, hardware, data and applications required to
perform the bulk of processing, management and the analysis work
required to achieve the desired results of the technology
application.
GPS provides a
technological framework for the capture of accurate locational
information for features stored in a GIS through the application
of satellite communications technology.
RS includes a set
of tools and technologies that support the location,
identification and classification of features from
remotely-sensed source data such as satellite images, aerial
photography and a host of similar data types.
Taken together, this group of related technologies is
applied in myriad ways to address a host of problems and issues
on a world-wide basis, from the adverse environmental impacts of
rampant, unplanned development to the more
utilization of resources that current environmental and
economic conditions demand.
