Digital Preservation at the Library of Congress: Making
Digital Content Available Now and in the Future Thursday, April 8, 2010 Lunch Event General Dynamics Executive Conference Center Rosslyn, VA |
About this event:
Learn how
this unique
organization
within the
LOC is
working to
keep
valuable
digital
information
permanently
available.
Congress
charged the
LOC in 2000
with
preserving
the nation’s
digital
heritage and
at the same
time making
sure that
its
collection
of 29
million
books and
105 million
other items
gathered
over the
last 200
years
remains
available
for the next
200 years.
Toward that
end, NDIIPP
has
developed
specifications
and tools
for the
transfer of
large
digital
files;
worked with
government,
academia and
industry on
best
practices
for
digitizing
and
preserving
data;
established
programs to
use delivery
platforms
such as
Flickr to
make LOC
content
available;
and
partnered
with an
array of
organizations
to harvest
content from
the Web for
archiving.
Challenge:
Preserving
many
terabytes of
essential
digital data
for use now
and in the
future.
Solution:
Cooperation
with
government,
industry and
academia to
create
specifications,
standards
and tools
for handling
and
preserving
digital data
in a variety
of formats;
establishing
a national
digital
stewardship
alliance to
broaden
digital
stewardship
capabilities
for
stakeholder
organizations.
Impact:
Millions of
at-risk
digital
items have
been
preserved
and made
available
online, and
millions
more digital
files are
being
gathered and
archived.
Scores of
organizations
are working
with the
Library to
leverage
resources
and
expertise in
building a
distributed
national
digital
collection. About our Speaker(s):William Lefurgy, Digital Initiatives Project Manager Office of Strategic Initiatives, Library of Congress
