BREAKFAST MEETING
Search The Way You Think -- Big Data and Intelligent Search

Friday, January 22, 2010
Breakfast Event
The Universities at Shady Grove

About this event:

Search The Way You Think explores the challenges created by the accelerating pace in the creation of digital information and the growing complexity of electronic information and the need for new investigative and search techniques.  Distilling complex questions and search requirements into a series of keywords and Boolean operators -  “ands” and “or”  - won’t help you find out if anyone has invented the smoke detecting cell phone, assemble medical evidence for comparative effectiveness research, or figure out what patents you need licenses for to develop new standards to support the Smart Grid.  These challenges demand intelligent search.

Two case studies will be presented.  The first on how intelligent search is changing the way patent searching and classification is improving intellectual property review for research, standard development, patent litigation and technology transfer; a domain where the pace of creation of digital scientific information is outpacing the availability of subject matter experts who can find prior art.  The second will present how the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Coronado Group are addressing the need for new investigative techniques in medical research and building an intelligent search tool for Answering Clinical Questions in Diagnostic Imaging.  With millions of medical research documents, intelligent search is allowing clinicians and medical researchers pose a search question where the technology “understands” the query even outside the searchers area of expertise to find actionable information faster.

Search The Way You Think will address the challenges we all face with the growing amounts of electronic data and present new approaches to searching and retrieving the needle in the digital haystack.

What we will learn:
  • New ways to think about finding and using information
  • How intelligent search techniques address real world Big Data problems
  • What’s wrong with conventional search and how to fix it
  • How intelligent search can help you explore topics outside your comfort zone
  • How to use intelligent search to find new insight and information in the giant repositories of digital data that already exist
About our speaker:

Arleen Zank is Co-Founder and President of Coronado Group, Ltd., a specialized systems integration and technology advisory firm that delivers intelligent search solutions for Big Data challenges.
