Happy New Year!

It’s time to kick off the 2009 New Year with new beginnings, new initiatives, and new opportunities. Join your colleagues for our joint NCC-AIIM/NOVA ARMA luncheon in Rosslyn on January 14, and our Hot Topics Breakfast is on January 22….

We are starting the New Year with our regular monthly Luncheon Meeting on Thursday, January 14, 2010, as a joint meeting with the Northern Virginia Chapter of ARMA at the General Dynamics Executive Conference Center at 1000 Wilson Blvd, Suite 810, in Rosslyn, VA.  John Montel, Former Senior Director, General Dynamics IT, will be speaking on Content and Records Management: Getting Stakeholder Buy-in.  You can register HERE.

Our next Hot Topics Breakfast is on FRIDAY, January 22, 2010, is at the Universities at Shady Grove, 9630 Gudelsky Drive, Building # 2, Room 1012, Rockville, Maryland.  Arleen Zank , Co-Founder and President of Coronado Group, Ltd., will speak on Search The Way You Think -- Big Data and Intelligent Search.  Arlen will tell us how Search The Way You Think explores the challenges created by the accelerating pace in the creation of digital information and the growing complexity of electronic information and the need for new investigative and search techniques. Again, you can register HERE.

Get ready for some dynamic training in February with the AIIM Electronic Records Management (ERM) Practitioner Class in the AIIM ERM Certificate Program.  Again, in cooperation with ARMA NOVA, on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, we will provide the ERM Practitioner program at the General Dynamics Executive Conference Center at 1000 Wilson Blvd, Suite 810, in Rosslyn, VA.

The ERM Practitioner program covers the lifecycle of records and related concepts such as classification schemes, metadata, security, retention, and disposal. This course, which was revised in early 2009, also includes changes in the vendor landscape; increased focus on email capture and retention; expanded focus on new content types such as wikis and blogs; and new best practices and standards. The course also provides additional focus on taxonomies; migration technologies for moving away from shared drives; auto-categorization to develop and maintain taxonomies, and auto-classification to extract metadata.  You will be awarded the AIIM ERM Practitioner (ermP) designation after passing an online exam.

We had a Site Visit at the GPO on Thursday, December 10, 2009.  Our speakers included Bob Tapella, Public Printer of the United States; Mike Wash, Chief Information Officer; and Selene Dalecky, FDsys Program Manager for a presentation on the Future Digital System (FDsys).

On Wednesday, November 18, 2009, we had a joint dinner meeting with the Northern Virginia Chapter of ARMA.  Laura McCarthy of NARA spoke on “NARA Regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations, 2009 Revisions to the Code” -- a timely presentation, as the new regulations became effective on November 4, 2009.

We had an excellent Site Visit on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at Quality Associates, Inc. in Columbia MD.  We had a tour of a first-class content conversion facility, as well as seeing technologies for production, desktop, and Multi Function Device document and information capture.  Some of you joined us for a Breakfast Hot Topics session at the Universities at Shady Grove on Thursday, October 22, 2009, as a Case Study of the “Naval Inventory Control Point (NAVICP) Tri-Services Enterprise Records Management Program for the Army, Air Force and the US Navy, Marine Corps Systems Command.”

We had two successful September meetings, including the kickoff luncheon meeting on September 10, 2009, on “President Obama's March to the White House Using ECM and Web 2.0 Tools” with Garrett M. Graff, a current editor at Washingtonian Magazine, and a talk on September 17, 2009, on “The Power of Networking for Your Business and Career Success in ECM” by author Sheila Savar at the NCC-AIIM reception, in conjunction with the AIIM International Road Show.

Our committees are a wonderful opportunity for you to meet and work with fellow information professionals to improve and enhance your NCC-AIIM experience.  The committee work is a backbone of the success of our Chapter.  Please let me know, if you are interested in joining one of our committees.

Our continuing thanks go to our Platinum Sponsors, General Dynamics Information Technology, and PrivaSoft; our Gold sponsors, Zimmerman Associates, NSI, and QAI; and our Silver sponsor, Scan Optics.  The financial support and assistance with our programs from all our sponsors have allowed us to better serve our members.  If your organization would like to become a sponsor to raise the profile of your organization and further the work of the Chapter, please contact me or one of the Executive Committee members.

We hold our monthly luncheon meetings at the General Dynamics Information Technology Conference Center conveniently located at the Rosslyn Metro.  Mark your calendar for the dates for upcoming meetings.  The Rosslyn Luncheon dates are: January 14, 2010; April 8, 2010; and May 13, 2010.  Look for additional information and directions at http://www.nccaiim.org.

We will end the program year with a social event in June.  We intend to have excellent educational programs, good networking opportunities, and entertaining key-note speakers.

We encourage you to make the most of opportunities that the Chapter provides, to come to meetings, to get involved in our committees, and to serve as a Committee chair or as a member of the Executive Committee.

If you have any suggestions as to how we can make our Chapter stronger, please let one of the Executive Committee members or me know.  With your help we can make a difference.
